Darius sat in front of his laptop and three portable monitors. So far, he hadn’t been able to make a dent, but he’d only been trying for thirty minutes. That was still frustrating as hell. Whoever set up the encryption knew what they were doing. He tapped a few more keystrokes and let the program he’d created for just this kind of thing do its work.

He glanced over his shoulder.

Fenmore had curled up in bed with her files, but had managed to fall asleep.

He took the papers from her lap as quietly as he could, set them on the nightstand, and pulled the comforter over her body. He kissed her forehead and stepped into the adjoining room.

The Brotherhood Protectors had booked two. While Jake knew he and Fenmore had a past, they had no idea they were sleeping together—or at least he didn’t think they did.

He pulled his cell from his back pocket and found Jake’s contact information.

He answered on the first ring. “How’s Baltimore?”

“I’m honestly glad I don’t live out here anymore, but I do love the Harbor,” he said.

“Any news?”

“Not yet. My program is working its magic.” He paced at the foot of the bed. “I wanted to run something by you.”

“What’s that?”

“Would you be willing to give Fenmore a meeting?”

“About what?” Jake asked.

“The Brotherhood Protectors organization and what it could offer her. That is if you had space for someone with her skill set.”

“We could always use someone with great investigative insight,” Jake said. “But is this you asking, or her?”

“At this point, honestly, probably more me than her.” When Darius had gotten booted from the military, he’d made a promise to himself to be more cash register honest with his bosses. There were times when discretion was a key term in any operation and not everyone was in the need-to-know circle. But Jake had given his team a new home along with a new lease on life. They had purpose now and no matter the outcome of the contents of that file, or whether or not Fenmore was able to get their case reopened, his team had carved out a niche that no one was going to stand in the way of ever again.

“That’s an interesting statement. I’m going to need a little more than that before I agree to a meeting and only because I don’t want someone who doesn’t want to be here.”

“She’s not all in with her current position, so I floated the idea by her. Before I pushed it more, I wanted to make sure it was something you’d entertain.”

“Why is this important to you? Is it personal?”

“Yeah. It is,” Darius admitted. “If I’m being honest, I never forgot about her and now that she’s back, I want to see where things could go.” It wouldn’t be the first time couples would work together in the Brotherhood Protectors organization. It did make for some sticky situations, but he was a professional, and so was Fenmore. If anyone could make it work, they could.
